In the world of user experience (UX) design, no two projects are the same. Each comes with its own unique challenges and requirements. This becomes particularly clear when comparing an Industry 4.0 project with an administrative project.

Comparison of Industry 4.0 and administrative projects from the perspective of the user experience (UX) area:

Complexity of user interfaces: In Industrie 4.0 projects, user interfaces are often more complex as they need to display a variety of technical data and process controls. In contrast, administrative projects tend to have interfaces that are geared towards greater general accessibility.

User interaction: Industry 4.0 applications often require more intensive interaction with the software, including the monitoring and control of machines or processes. Administrative projects, on the other hand, focus more on information management and processing.

Data analysis and visualization: In Industry 4.0 projects, the presentation of real-time data and complex analyses is crucial. Administrative projects require more traditional forms of data visualization, such as tables or simple graphics, to present information in a clear and understandable way.

Security and data protection requirements: Both projects have high security and data protection requirements, but the specific requirements may differ. Industry 4.0 projects often need to implement stricter security protocols for the protection of critical infrastructure and sensitive technical data, while administrative projects tend to focus more on the protection of personal data.

Despite these differences, there are basic processes that can serve as a guide to success.

The general process of a UX project (DIN EN ISO 9241-210)

  1. Initialization of the project: This is about getting the project off the ground. Important steps include stakeholder interviews, the formulation of a value proposition, a kickoff meeting and initial estimates.
  2. Understanding the context of use and domain: This step involves individual interviews with users and collecting data to develop a deep understanding of all stakeholders and the domain in which the project is located.
  3. Analysis and definition of requirements: This is where data analytics and requirements analysis become central. Using analysis techniques, user data is evaluated in order to develop personas and user experience maps. This data-driven approach makes it possible to define tailored requirements and optimize wireframes accordingly.
  4. Creation of concepts and design solutions: In this phase, paper prototypes, wireframes, usability style guide and design specifications as well as keyscreens are developed based on the previous analyses.
  5. Evaluation of the solutions: Usability tests, eye-tracking, inspection-based evaluations are central to testing and refining the solutions created. Data analytics also plays a role here by helping to quantify and interpret the results of the tests and feedback.

Communication, Flexibility and Data

Communication is a crucial aspect of the UX process. The ability to translate complex data and analyses into understandable concepts and to communicate these within the team and to the customer is a key skill. Flexibility is also of great importance. It must be possible to adapt the process to new requirements and changes during the course of the project.

The Key to Success: User Involvement

A central point in the UX process is the involvement of users and their data. By collecting direct feedback and adapting the solutions to their needs, supported by in-depth data analysis, the end result will not only be functional, but also user-friendly and therefore satisfying to use.
